Today is the 6th White House Science Fair hosted by President Barack Obama, who started the tradition of inviting young inventors and innovators to present their science projects in an effort to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

This year’s theme is about girls and is specifically  focused on encouraging more girls and women to excel in  STEM by including many of them in the fair.

It is all apart of this White House Administration’s $4.35 billion Race to the Top competition, which provides states with competitive preference if they demonstrate efforts to close the STEM gap for girls and other groups that are underrepresented.

The President began the tradition of hosting  when he launched his Educate to Innovate campaign to inspire more girls and boys to excel in STEM subjects.

Back then he remarked,  “If you win the NCAA championship, you come to the White House. Well, if you’re a young person and you produce the best experiment or design, the best hardware or software, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too.”
